What do I need SERMI for when maintaining/repairing Mercedes-Benz vehicles?

SERMI authentication (SERMI = Security-Related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information) is required for all reprogramming activities on theft-relevant vehicle components. This includes, for example, procurement, replacement and reprogramming of theft-relevant control units or electronic vehicle keys.

Where can I get an authorization for SERMI? Which authority or institution should I contact?

In every country of the EU, at least one so-called conformity assessment body (CAB = Conformity Assessment Body) is responsible for authorizing independent workshops and their employees for SERMI. You will therefore need to contact a CAB responsible for your country. You can find out whether your country is already ready for the SERMI scheme, as well as further information on SERMI and details of the procedure, on the external website www.vehiclesermi.eu.

What is SERMI NOT required for when servicing/repairing Mercedes-Benz vehicles?

No SERMI authentication is still required for all access and activities that do not affect theft-relevant vehicle components. For example, you can change a particulate filter and "reset" the engine control without being certified for SERMI.

What does the SERMI regulation require of vehicle manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz AG?

According to the SERMI regulation, vehicle manufacturers are obliged to grant access to theft-relevant information to any independent workshop that has an electronic SERMI certificate. The SERMI certificate is issued by a public body after the workshop and the respective employee have been inspected. This certificate must be accepted by all manufacturers who have vehicles registered in the European Union.

What does the SERMI regulation require of independent workshops?

Independent market participants such as independent workshops must be checked and authorized by a country-specific assessment body according to uniformly defined criteria - the SERMI regulations. Also the CAB deposits the SERMI certificate issued for this purpose with the trust center responsible throughout Europe. So the independent workshop is still able to access theft-relevant information from vehicle manufacturers in the future. Will a repair shop or individuals be approved for SERMI and when will this be possible?

The individual repair shop must be approved for SERMI by the country-specific registration office and the employees who need access to theft-relevant information must also be authorized respectively.

What requirements must be met in order for FBS4 keys to be programmed on the vehicle?

For the authorization to program FBS4 keys, the training T2814V is required.

Is the authorization for SERMI an obligation for repair shops or is it voluntary?

Authorization is required if a company wishes to carry out reprogramming activities on theft-relevant vehicle components via XENTRY Diagnosis.

What exactly is meant by Security-Related Repair and Maintenance Information and what examples are there?

'Security-Related Repair and Maintenance information' or 'Security-Related RMI' indicates information, software, functions and services necessary for repair and maintenance of theft-relevant equipment of the vehicle (Regulation (EU) 2021/1244 amending Annex X to Regulation (EU) 2018/858 Appendix 3 point 2.1.3.). At Mercedes-Benz, theft-relevant van racking systems are, in particular, electronic components of the driving authorization system.

Can an automotive repair shop with SERMI authentication log in directly to the OEM manufacturer systems?

SERMI certificates are not used for basic registration in manufacturer systems; for this purpose, the Mercedes-Benz ID is still required and used for Mercedes-Benz systems. SERMI authorization is additionally required if theft-related information is to be accessed. You have to imagine the process likewise to two-factor authentication, as used in many online offers. The SERMI certificate can be thought of as an electronic ID card that is managed by a trust center. With these credentials the vehicle company proves to the manufacturer that it has a SERMI authorization.

How much does it cost to access information and functions protected by SERMI at Mercedes-Benz?

For registration as a SERMI authorized user in Mercedes-Benz systems and the use of the information and functions protected by SERMI, Mercedes-Benz waives the charge of a separate fee.

I have XENTRY equipment with flash rights. Can I also use them to work on theft-relevant components or do I need new equipment?

With regard to the application of XENTRY tools, SERMI does not change anything. Existing devices can therefore continue to be used for work on theft-relevant components. In this case, only the SERMI authorization (electronic certificate) is required in addition.
